This is quite a wintry winter! You know the weather is extreme when Islanders Talk is
taken over by discussions about plowing and shoveling. It is a nice moment for the group, with neighbors helping neighbors and sharing info about warming shelters and ride-shares. The snow and cold is fun for kids and difficult for older folks, so bundle up, and check on your friends.
You may have noticed, by the overflowing candy and heart-shaped things in the stores, that despite the snow — Valentine’s Day is coming! But don’t worry, the P.A. Club and
Mo’s Lunch have you covered. This Saturday, Feb. 7th, there will be a pop-up Valentine’s shop from 11 am to 3 pm, where you can find sweets and treats for everyone on your list. And you can grab a drink and great food, and catch up on town gossip, while you’re there!
The MVRHS varsity girls’ basketball team is having a great season, under the leadership of coaches Mary Korba and Emily deBettencourt. On Tuesday, Feb. 10, they’re playing a home game against Sandwich at 4:30 pm. Head over to the high school gym and witness this excellent team!
Say this three times fast: Sheep Shearing Shindig. It’s happening at the Ag Hall on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 10 am to noon. Shearing demos and fiber arts, free for the
community.
The Ag Hall partners with the M.V. Family Center to offer Barn Buddies on Sundays. It is a chance for little ones to run, ride, and play throughout the big hall, getting some of that big energy out! The next Barn Buddies is Sunday, Feb. 14, 2:30 to 4 pm.
We are very lucky to have the YMCA in our community. It is such a warm, bright, and welcoming place! The lobby features a sunny space, with Aquila offering delicious coffee, smoothies, and food. Classes go on all day for people of all ages and abilities, or you can just drop in for the workout room or pool. Membership is reasonable, and financial aid is available.
Happy birthday to Jeremy Driesen on Feb. 5! He shares the day with Debbie Grant. Alyssa Sylvia will blow out her candles on Feb. 6! She shares the day with Melody Parlos, the youngest of the Parlos pack. Lana Schaefer and Marc Rivers celebrate their day on Feb. 7.
Two Polar Bears share Feb. 8 birthdays: Sabrina Bayne and our fearless aerobics leader, Brenda Davenport! Angelina (“Ani”) Topalieva gets birthday hugs on the 8th also! Happy birthday to George Valentzas on Feb. 10. He shares the day with Lisa Belcastro and Nico Pizzano. Bunches of balloons are going to Judy Pachico on the 11th. Judy shares the day with Juanita Espino and Kristen Tidmarsh Araujo. What do Brad Tucker and Abraham Lincoln have in common? Honest men with a birthday on the 12th! Sandy Pratt celebrates on the 12th as well.
