Our Island community is dealing with grief, as the news of the passing of Tricia Bergeron and Roy Scheffer devastated friends and family members at the start of 2026. Even for those who may not have known them personally, their presence, kindness, and contributions to the Island were and always will be deeply embedded into this life. Losses like these remind me of how small yet connected this community truly is, and how deeply two humans can touch so many lives. I extend heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and all who will feel their absence.

If you’re looking for ways to feel more connected as we go through this grief, consider having a community supper at St. Andrew’s, which started this week. They are every Monday at 5:30 pm at the Parish Hall. All are welcome, and in my opinion, being in community while being fed is just one of the best ways to grieve — in community and with nourishment, which we all need an extra bit of now.

Something that might help this time of year as well, and timely, as I noticed that Donaroma’s Nursery has its big winter sale happening now, is surrounding yourself with plants. At Donaroma’s, all the houseplants, orchids, and more are 40 percent off. Hear me out: I know this might sound like a stretch, but I do believe that plants offer a significant benefit during a grieving period, as they provide routine and connection to life, and act as a grounding activity that scientifically reduces stress and anxiety.

The crazy thing about grief is that life keeps going, even in your darkest moments. Because there’s no great segue from talking about losing beloved Islanders to sharing upcoming events, consider this the respectful intermission.

On Jan. 8 at 10:30 am, Navigator Homes (490 Edgartown–Vineyard Haven Road) invites us to a social gathering over hot cocoa and cookies, and to tour one of their small homes. Explore a home while staff will be onsite to guide the tour and answer any questions you might have. A new kind of skilled nursing community that features warm, home-like cottages and 24/7 care, it’s worth exploring these options even before you or someone you love might need them!

On Jan. 10 at 10 am, register for a bagel-making class with Teri Culetto, also known as the Vineyard Baker. This hands-on class will guide you on how to make delicious bagels, and participants will each take home a half-dozen bagels. The price is $40, and you can sign up online at thetrustees.org/event/443199

On that same day, at 11:30 am, Trish Ginter will be guiding a sound bath at the Edgartown library. This hourlong experience is deeply nourishing, calming, and relaxing. Registration is required, as these are sought-out experiences. Go to bit.ly/EPL_SoundBath.

Last but certainly not least, on Jan. 14 at 5pm, Adam Moore of Sheriff’s Meadow will be presenting in the first “Community in Conversation at the Carnegie” of the year. The topic of conversation will be about the Southern pine beetle, an insect that I’ve never in my own 40 years of life even thought about, but one that Adam Moore has had years of experience with as forester and president of Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation. Suggested donation is $10. More details online at bit.ly/VT_CarnegieConversations.

Birthday congratulations go out to Maranda Post on Jan. 2, Elizabeth Cecil and Rebecca Kim Bartlett on Jan. 3, Katie Kidder on Jan. 10, and Jenna Sylvia on Jan. 14. May your days be filled with joy!
