Heard on Main Street: If I were wrong, don’t you think I’d know?

Tomorrow the Vineyard Conservation Society and Great Pond Foundation are offering a free screening of “Finding a Better Balance,” the second of the Great Ponds film series by local filmmaker Ollie Becker, who will be on hand to discuss the film. Note: This is tomorrow, Friday, July 18, at 7 pm, in the barn at Stillpoint. This is free and open to the public. More at 508-693-9588, mvconservation.org, or stillpointmv.org.

After the film, stay for a community discussion with Samantha Look of VCS and Emily Reddington of the Great Pond Foundation. Samantha will offer practical and responsible land-care practices. Emily will share scientific insights drawn from the research and monitoring of Island ponds, which need help. Explore how simple changes in lawn and landscape care can make a big difference for water quality and ecological health.

I really enjoyed the weather last week, even the rain. The slightly cooler days let me walk outside. That sounds so strange, but I live on a dirt road with no sidewalks, and need a rollator to walk safely. I can’t walk without a smooth surface — the four small wheels get caught by even tiny pebbles. I am learning to walk again after being restricted for many months with a foot injury. It is an effort to walk a little farther each time.

My house is much happier today. The eaves were filled with leaves, and even some tiny trees were trying to grow along the back of the roof. I think I have found someone to help. We did desperately need this work done. This man even offered to do some minor repairs for me.

I have heard good things about the FARM Institute tours of the Trustees of Reservations: reasonable pricing, garden tour, and also a wagon ride. 508-627-7007. This probably caught my eye because I just finished a delightful Vineyard story called “Sheepish,” by T. Elizabeth Bell, featuring a baby lamb that I fell in love with.

With climate warming, more cities across our country are already seeing dangerous increases in overnight temperatures. We have even seen a touch of that. We are so fortunate to have our surrounding ocean and offshore winds to help us keep more moderate temperatures.

The M.V. Chamber Music Society provides instruments and assistance to our schools. They raise funds by hosting many musical performances. You could help by volunteering to pick up musicians at the ferry, hosting a musician overnight, or helping at the door at concerts. Call 508-426-9825, or email mvmcs@vineyard.net.

I am very sorry to learn of the passing of Sandra Healy. I only knew her through the many tasty meals we enjoyed from John’s Fish Market. Sandra owned and operated John’s Fish Market for nearly 50 years. She was well-known for her warm smile as well as the high-quality food, which is still available.

Happy anniversary to Eric and Susan Lopes on Tuesday.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Chris Clark. Happy birthday on Saturday to Brent Clark and Linda Kurth. Barbara Flanders parties on Wednesday.
