Tonight at 6 pm, Thursday, July 14, all residents and business owners are welcome to take part in the Tisbury Vision Council meeting at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. Little ones will delight in storytime on Tuesday, July 19, with two special visitors, Elephant and Piggie, at 10 am for ages to 3, and at 11 am for ages 3 and up.

This week we enjoyed our granddaughters Rory and Fiona visiting from Westboro. Fiona is 9 and Rory will be 11 in two weeks. What a wonderful age. First stop was Owen Park to catch crabs, next was Tashmoo Landing for smaller maritime creatures such as sea robins. They also delight in our library, getting books, movies, and audiotapes to listen to as we crawl through the summer traffic. A special treat is when the girls join my quilting group for quilting on the beach, our summer meeting place, which includes supper. The girls prefer to choose pizza to take to Pizza Beach.

Next Tuesday, July 19, at 7 pm Shirley Mayhew will talk about “The Circus Comes to Martha’s Vineyard,” her new book about how the Mills Brothers Circus came to the island in 1963. This Islander took lions, tigers, elephants, and circus trappings on some special trips at night to make the circus happen. She will read excerpts at the Vineyard Haven Public Library.

Sisters Jennifer McCurdy and Wendy Mulhern are daughters of Pam Cassell of our town. They invite you to the opening reception for Jennifer’s ceramic art exhibit from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday, July 17, followed by Wendy’s poetry reading from 6 to 6:30 pm at Featherstone.

Lyme disease? On Wednesday, July 20, at 1 pm at our library, MIT professor Kevin Esvelt will talk about a new way to permanently reduce the risk of Lyme disease.

It was reported that last week a woman called out her car window to a friend on Main Street, “There are no eggs on the Island this morning. The restaurants bought them all. More won’t be in until the ferry comes.”

The First Congregational Church of West Tisbury hosts the Blueberry Festival on Saturday, July 16, from noon to 4 pm. Enjoy blueberry treats at tables and chairs on the front lawn, blueberry smoothies and blueberry peach cobbler like your grandmother used to make. Take home blueberry pies, blueberry muffins, scones, and jam, as well as vintage jewelry, African crafts, and a raffle for a blueberry bush that will be delivered. All proceeds support this historic church and our Island community.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Cord Bailey, Michele Jones, and Cathlin Baker of the West Tisbury Church. Tomorrow, wish the best to Donna Tankard and Jocelyn Ciancio Broadley. Jim Richardson celebrates on Saturday. Sunday belongs to Chris Clark. Happy birthday on Wednesday to Linda Kurth.

Heard on Main Street: Now the beaches are overcrowded and shops are, too.
